Chapter Twelve
Hawk very loudly didnât say anything over breakfast. I made eggs, all the eggs in The Chiefâs fridge, and the rest of the bread. We werenât going to be able to stay holed up here for much longer with Hawkâs appetite. But I guess, with his muscle mass, he needed to scarf things down like a food contest champion.
It wasnât until I stood in the training room staring down a sparring bag did he finally talk. âYou do realize you can swallow your pride and call him. Apologize and move on. Youâre mated, itâs a lot more permanent than even a straight up marriage. Iâm sure youâll work it out.â
I couldnât explain our past and how many times Iâd put the road between Fin and I. How many times Iâd done the opposite of what he asked of me. Nor did I want to go into it with him. My personal life remained personal, even if I suddenly had several new people around who thought they should get a sneak peek into things.
I glared at him while I punched the bag, a little harder than necessary for effort.
He watched my form for a moment and then nodded. âHow does it feel doing that without access to your magic?â
I shrugged and tightened the straps around my hands. âThe Chiefâs house cuts me off from it, but itâs not uncomfortable. Iâve gone most of my life without magic, so it doesnât really bother me not to be able to access it. As cool as the stuff is on TV, itâs not like Iâm walking around casting spells and using it to live my life. It mostly only comes out when I need to hurt people or defend myself.â
He nodded thoughtfully and took up his own stances against his bag. His punches were decidedly harder and sent it teetering so hard the ring creaked against the metal.
âI guess all those eggs are paying off.â
âIâd say fuck off, but youâre not wrong.â
My phone ringing kept him from any more witty remarks. I snagged it off the towel and glared at him while I answered. âHello?â
âIs this Zoey?â
The voice didnât sound familiar. âWho is this?â
âEcho. Do you remember me?â The mage who turned my world inside out, and not in a good way.
Hawk crossed the mats to listen as I hit the speaker button. âWhat can I do for you? After you tell me, maybe tell me how you got my number.â
âI got it from Helix. He said you might be less hostile if I called first. Can we meet?â
âWhy?â
He huffed into the phone, as if I were the one wasting his time. âDidnât I help you? Why are you treating me like a stranger? I let you into my mind.â
Men. All the same. I rolled my eyes and didnât bother glancing at Hawk. âAnd what, now we have to consummate our relationship with pointless chitchat? What the hell are you calling for?â
There was a long pause and he finally spoke again. âAre you going after The Black Mage?â
Now he had my attention.
